ABOUT DERRY

GROUP
Come along to our photo sessions to dust off your camera and get snap-happy with a professional photography instructor.

Brush up on your camera skills and learn new photography techniques whilst on a photo walk class with other local keen photographers!

We run two hour photography sessions based on a photography theme/technique/style and they take place in various locations in Derry .

  • New to photography? We also run a popular 3 hour Beginners Guide to Photography Class once a month. And once in a while we will run special niche 3 hour classes, for example, Astrophotography - so do subscribe to our newsletter to know when the next on is!

  • Who can attend? Open to all skill levels, from beginners to keen amateurs. The photography instructor is there to help you with camera settings and provide any advice you need.

  • What to bring? We recommend bringing a camera that has full manual mode or semi-manual modes (Aperture or Shutter Priority). Compact cameras and smartphones also welcome!

The meeting point and full details for the day are sent in the booking confirmation email to the email address you provide at time of booking.

Join the Derry Photography Group on Facebook to share your photos after the session.

The beginner photography class was very informative and engaging. I appreciated how the concepts were explained in a simple way, especially for complete beginners like myself. The hands-on practice helped me better understand my camera settings, composition, and how to use my camera more confidently.

I recently purchased a Dji Mavic 4 Pro drone and I was trying it out to get used to the controls. As I raised it above the bridge I took the photo of the River Foyle as it flowed down and out into the Atlantic Ocean. You can see Derry City in the background.

I could hear the grasshopper all the while I was in that part of the grounds and eventually decided to try and find it. I took the pic and knew it was gonna be a keeper but never did I think it would be like this. I've never managed anything close since.

Title or Location: Common Tern with a just caught fish to feed its chicks. C. Sam. Smith Park
I was looking for Whimbrels, or other migratory shore birds when I spotted this common tern flying around. At some point it dove and caught a fish. I instinctively aimed my camera and took a few pictures before flying away.

Steam was really enshrouding the main pool of Grand Prismatic, so I looked for other compelling ways to capture images. This image features some of the sinter terraces and cooler water thermophiles thriving around the central pool perimeter.

This is at the end of a 3.5 mile hike, with no trail, after you have a limited availability permit. Took me 5 years to get it. It is better to be there late morning to mid afternoon so the formation is fully illuminated.
